Ultrasound simulator for Bristol University

Ultrasound simulator for Bristol University

The ultrasound team at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol has taken delivery of a ScanTrainer ultrasound scanning simulator from Cardiff Medicentre company Medaphor. This will enable Students to practice scanning technique at the beginning of their training in a classroom setting rather than learning on real patients. The new state-of-the-art simulator is said to be one of only three in the world which has both transvaginal and transabdominal applications. A haptic device which replicates the force-fields experienced
when scanning patients enables the students to experience live scanning under tuition in a safe environment. Various modules are available on the system which can take the student through normal anatomy appearances to complex pathology. The system can also be used to assess student’s levels of competence for scanning technique and pattern recognition. It is anticipated that the system may also have applications in assessing a potential student’s ability to train successfully as a sonographer.

Marc Griffiths said:  “This system will enhance the training provision provided by UWE for ultrasound students. It will
ensure students obtain the skills required to perform a variety of scans in the classroom setting, helping to alleviate the pressure in clinical scanning departments.”
