Cardiff Medicentre tenant Cansford Laboratories has held a formal launch ceremony attended by the Welsh Government's business minister Edwina Hart and the Brazilian ambassador Roberto Jaguaribe.

Since arriving last year, the company has set up a state-of-the-art drug & alcohol testing laboratory at the Cardiff Medicentre. Cansford has already set up an partnership with a laboratory in Sao Paulo, Brazil and plans a further international joint venture in Australia.

Edwina Hart commented: "It’s always good to hear that technology developed in Wales is having an impact in countries around the world, and highlights yet again the importance of entrepreneurs and their potential contribution to the Welsh economy."

Cardiff Medicentre's role in nurturing successful spinouts from university departments has been hailed in the latest edition of Cardiff University News.

The article highlights Cardiff Medicentre's important role as a business incubator caterting for early-stage medical, healthcare and life sciences companies.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Diurnal has successfully raised £335,000 for its lead product Chronocort to complete the final stage of its Phase I trial. The funding will also enable the company to prepare for Phase II trials, which are due to commence during 2012.

Diurnal is a FusionIP plc portfolio company and is developing a novel approach to drug delivery that will help patients suffering from reduced levels of the key hormone cortisol. Chronocort is a modified release therapy that deliversthe hormone in a manner that mimics the body’s normal circadian rhythm. This approach has the potential to help patients suffering from congenital adrenal hyperplasia and adrenal insufficiency.

Dr Mark Bowman, Director of Innovation at Cardiff Medicentre, was interviewed today on Radio Wales' Good Evening Wales programme.

He was invited on to the programme to comment on the Welsh Government's announcement of a £50 million package to support the recruitment of world-class academic experts by Welsh universities.

Dr Bowman emphasised the need to capture the economic benefits of these future appointments through the creation and long-term retention of Welsh spin-out companies based on their research efforts.

Oxford Innovation, now a tenant at Cardiff Medicentre, has been appointed by the Welsh Government to deliver a new programme that will assist start-up and early stage life sciences firms with high growth potential.

The High Potential Starts programme is a key component of the Welsh Government’s strategy to support sustainable high growth businesses. It has been funded by the Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund.

Support will be available across Wales for firms in the biosciences, medical devices and diagnostics fields and associated supply chain technologies such as electronics, engineering, advanced material science and logistics.

Asalus Medical Instruments, a spinout from Cardiff Medicentre tenant WIMAT, has completed a first closing of a £700,000 venture capital funding round. This follows a successful pre-clinical study of its lead product, Innervision, the company's revolutionary electrosurgical smoke clearance device.

The £292,000 first closing includes contributions from existing investors Fusion IP plc, Finance Wales and IP Group plc. The investors have an option to invest a further £392,000, subject to investor approval and the achievement of milestones.

The funds will be used to commence a "first-in-man" clinical study, subject to regulatory approval. Work will also begin on the process of scaling up the technology, prior to its expected launch in 2013.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Diurnal has announced that its lead product Chronocort^® has successfully completed a clinical trial in healthy volunteers.

Cardiff Medicentre has hosted a highly successful and entertaining visit by a group of 23 Year 12 students from Stanwell School in Penarth.

The students were given the opportunity to take part in a broad range of interactive product and service demonstrations by our tenants MedaPhor, Pharmatelligence and WIMAT. 

To round off the visit, Dr Chris Pepper, Reader in Haematology at Cardiff University's School of Medicine, gave a talk on his plans for setting up a new start-up company based on over 13 years of cancer research carried out within his research group.

Dr Mark Bowman, Director of Innovation at the Cardiff Medicentre, commented "This  visit was designed to encourage the students, all of whom are studying science subjects at A Level, to consider applying for summer placements here." 

He added "In the longer term, I hope that these students will consider working for technology start-ups as an alternative to more traditional graduate roles in large, established employers. With youth entrepreneurship now a key policy objective in Wales, the students have also had the opportunity today to appreciate the hard work and dedication that is involved in setting up a new life sciences business."

The Cardiff Shine Project, which received siginificant assistance from Cardiff Medicentre tenant Cedar, has won the 2011 MediWales 'Innovation within the NHS Award'.

The project involved moving a gynaecological surgical procedure from the operating theatre to a new outpatient clinic. This innovation has received excellent feedback from patients and has already made significant savings for the Cardiff and Vale University Hospital Board. It is hoped that the approach will now be adopted across the UK.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Pharmatelligence has expanded again following a number of new contract wins.

The company has moved into a newly refurbished large unit in order to allow integration of its operational team and to enable further expansion in staff numbers early in 2012.

The company provides analytical services that support the pharmaceutical industry in demonstrating the value of their products.

Cardiff Medicentre has hosted a vist by Julie Morgan AM, Labour's Welsh Assembly member for Cardiff North. The event was intended to highlight the successful spin-out companies based here and created as a result of the partnership between Cardiff University and Fusion IP plc.

Mrs Morgan was given a demonstration of our tenant MedaPhor Ltd's ScanTrainer product by the company's founder Professor Nazar Amso. ScanTrainer is used for medical ultrasound training, with the company recently announcing its first European and US sales.

Mrs Morgan later met with Dr Neil Warren, founder of Asalus Medical Instruments and head of our tenant WIMAT. Dr Warren demonstrated a number of new products being developed by the company, currently focused on the minimally invasive surgery market. The company's flagship product, Innervision, removes the smoke produced during operations by the use of advanced electrosurgical instruments.

The Cardiff Medicentre's enviable track record of helping early-stage life science companies to succeed has been highlighted in an article in the Western Mail's Business in Wales magazine.

Cardiff Medicentre graduate Q Chip has signed an agreement with a leading international speciality pharmaceutical company to undertake the development of a sustained release depot of an undisclosed therapeutic peptide.

The agreement stipulates that all costs of preclinical and clinical development will be borne by Q Chip's partner. Q Chip will also receive substantial success based payments in future, and will provide the manufactured product after regulatory approval.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Abcellute has expanded into a bespoke laboratory unit.

Abcellute was founded in September 2001 as a spinout from Cardiff University's School of Biosciences. The company’s core technology is a proprietary media, SureTran™, that enables the extended use of fresh cells without the need for cryopreservation.

Theryte has joined the Cardiff Medicentre as a new tenant.

Theryte was founded as a venture capital backed biotechnology spin-out from the University of Liverpool, initially to develop new cancer diagnostics and delivery systems. Theryte has now refocused its activities to create new anti-cancer drugs, demonstrate in vivo proof-of-principle in established models of cancer, and complete serial licensing deals with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

Theryte operates a virtual model for its discovery and development operations, outsourcing its chemistry, discovery biology and in vivo testing to a number of specialist commercial providers in Europe and North America, and partnering with leading universities and research institutes.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Picofluidics has expanded following success in recent contract negotiations.

Picofluidics was formed in 2009 to provide practical solutions for customers with applications that require microfluidic systems.

Much of the experience in the company comes from the microelectronics/thin films solar cell process equipment industry and, as such, the founders have extensive experience in process equipment design and integrated process flows.

Cardiff Medicentre has held host to the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh during their visit to our tenant WIMAT for the regional Lister Competition.

This competition is open to 5th year medical students and measures their skills in 4 areas. Knot Tying, Suturing, Removal of a Cyst and Laparoscopic Skills.

The winner of today's competition will represent Wales in the Finals at RCS Edinburgh next February. WIMAT was delighted to host this regional heat and the event was sponsored by Ethicon, part of John and Johnson.

The recent surge in occupancy at Cardiff Medicentre has been highlighted at the recent UKSPA conference held at Birmingham Science Park Aston.

This increase, from 60% in April 2010 to 85%, has been achieved through a combination of new arrivals and internal expansions, thus bucking the general outlook of economic gloom.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant AssayMetrics, whose revolutionary new product speeds up drug development, has secured an undisclosed second-round equity investment from Finance Wales.

Dr Keith Weeks, Research and Design Director of Cardiff Medicentre tenant Authentic World, has been conferred with the title Professor of Healthcare Numeracy and Education by the University of Glamorgan.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Cedar has expanded following the award of a new three year contract under the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence's Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme.

Established by NICE in 2009, the focus of this new area of work is specifically on the evaluation of innovative medical technologies, including devices and diagnostics.

Dr Craig Currie, founder and managing director of Cardiff medicentre tenant Pharmatelligence, has won the 2011 ISPOR Award for Excellence in Application in Pharmacoeconomics and Health Outcomes Research.

This award recognizes internationally outstanding practical application of pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research in health care decision-making.

Cansford Laboratories has launched a new laboratory based service at Cardiff Medicentre. The company has been set up to address the issue of faster, accurate analysis of drugs of abuse in the UK.

Cansford Laboratories has recruited a small team of scientific experts who will liaise directly with clients to ensure that they will benefit fully from the tests that are available.

The founders of Cansford Laboratories, John Wicks and Lolita Tsanaclis, previously established Tricho-Tech, a graduate of the Cardiff Medicentre that was acquired by Concateno plc in January 2007 for £11.25 million.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant WIMAT has been boosted by the news that its spin-out Asalus Medical Instruments has successfully completed a £510,000 funding round.

This investment will enable the company to further develop its first three products: Clearvision, Snugport and Surehold.

Asalus, a Fusion IP plc portfolio company, is developing three innovative medical devices that will improve the safety and efficiency of laparoscopic surgery.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Cedar has appointed three new Clinical Evaluators: Dr Judith White, Kathleen Withers and Stephen Jones. Kathleen and Stephen join Cedar from within Cardiff and Vale UHB, where both worked as Poisons Information Scientists at a specialist NHS Poisons Information Service run from Llandough Hospital. Judith joins Cedar from Cardiff University, where she was a Post Doctorate Researcher in microbiology.

These appointments will strengthen Cedar's ability to deliver its work programme for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Ovasort has expanded to take on new laboratory space following its discovery of sex linked proteins on the surface of the sperm cells of both pigs and cattle.

The company has developed a prototype product that will identify and separate the male and female cells for each sex.

This breakthrough, supported by funding from the Welsh Government, is predicted to have a major impact on the global livestock industry.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant MedaPhor, a Fusion IP plc portfolio company, has received a £50,000 equity investment from the Cardiff Capital Fund alongside £140,000 from Fusion IP plc and £100,000 from Finance Wales.

The investment, which also includes money from private investors, aims to support the sales of MedaPhor’s new ScanTrainer simulator in the UK and to sign up overseas distributors.

Cardiff Medicentre has appointed Dr Mark Bowman as Director of Innovation.  Dr Bowman joins the team having previously worked as a venture capital investor in early-stage technology companies.  Prior to this, Mark held senior commercial positions at a number of UK universities. 

Dr Bowman originally trained as a chemist at the University of Oxford before taking a PhD at Cardiff University and an MBA at Warwick Business School.  In 2002, he was awarded a prestigious Sainsbury Management Fellowship in the Life Sciences.

Cardiff Medicentre's role in flourishing Welsh bioscience sector has been recognised by Leslie Griffiths, the Welsh Assembly Government's Deputy Minister for Science, Innovation & Skills. In an article in the Western Mail, Mr Griffiths has hailed the rapid progress in the Welsh biosciences sector.

According to the Deputy Minister, the sector has grown by over 19% in the past three years and employs around 15,000 people, many in high quality postgraduate and post-doctoral roles. The sector has an estimated annual turnover of £1.3bn, with exports amounting to some £54m.

Cell Therapy has joined the Cardiff medicentre as a new tenant.

The company has been established to develop the world's first stem cell product that reduces the size of scarring induced by heart attacks. This product has the potential to increase the life expectancy of over 5 million sufferers per year by utilising patients' own cells. This revolutionary stem cell treatment will also be among the first class of next generation medicines that are adaptive and personalised to the individual.

The company is based around the research of Nobel prize winning scientist Professor Sir Martin Evans.

Cardiff Research Consortium, acquired by Capita Group plc in February 2009, has graduated from the Cardiff Medicentre following a significant expansion in staff numbers.

The company now has 13 employees and has re-located to larger follow-on facilities on Newport Road, Cardiff to continue its development.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant OnExamination, a subsidairy of the BMJ Group, has appointed a new managing director.

Nicola Rylett was previously Head of Marketing for Nelson Thornes, an educational publisher specialising in curriculum resources and exam support services for the schools market. She has a wealth of experience across senior sales and marketing roles, which include appointments at TMP Worldwide Advertising & Communications Ltd and the Institute of Physics Publishing.

Cardiff Medicentre teant MedaPhor, a Fusion IP plc portfolio company, has received a £150,000 co-investment from Fusion IP plc and Finance Wales. Alongside this equity investment, the company has also received a £100,000 SMARTCymru award from the Welsh Government.

The combined funds will be used to develop the company's ultrasound simulator technology for commercial launch in 2009.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant OnExamination, part of the BMJ Group, has launched a a new online exam preparation resource that will help specialist trainees in gastroenterology prepare for the knowledge based assessment (KBA).

The gastroenterology exam is the first of several speciality KBAs being introduced by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians in the UK to verify that certified specialists have sufficient knowledge of their speciality to practice safely and competently as consultants, as well as providing a rigorous national assessment helping create public confidence.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant OnExamination, part of the BMJ Group, has launched a doctor-led education resource for sixth-formers taking their first steps towards a career in medicine.

Aimed at sixth-form students taking the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) preparation course, this new resource seeks to prepare students for the key elements of this medical school entrance test. The exam has been adopted by the majority of UK medical and dental schools as part of the selection process.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant OnExamination, part of the BMJ Group, has launched a new online revision resource that will help medical students improve their knowledge of safe prescribing.

This will be achieved by allowing students to assess and diagnose common clinical conditions while using the British National Formulary.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant OnExamination, part of the BMJ Group, has launched a Pharmacy Registration revision resource.

This will help trainee pharmacists prepare for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain registration exam which they must pass in order to become registered practising pharmacists.

Following its recent graduation from the Cardiff Medicentre, Q Chip has raised over £2 million from new and existing shareholders.

Among the new investors is Finance Wales. Existing shareholders E-Synergy’s Early Growth Fund, Aim listed Biofusion plc and individual shareholders including Jon Moulton, managing partner of Alchemy Partners, also participated in the investment round.

Tricho-Tech Ltd, a Graduate of the Cardiff Medicentre, has been acquired by Concateno plc for £11.25 million.

Founded in 1993 and based in Cardiff, Tricho-Tech focuses on detecting drugs of abuse, principally through testing hair samples. It employs 46 full time staff at its laboratory in Cardiff, which is a broad and in-depth testing facility, with the capability to test 14 drug groups and over 40 analytes.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Ovasort Ltd has signed a deal with the owners of Danish Baconfor new technology which could allow breeders to preselect the sex of piglets. Female pigs are often preferable to male pigs as they taste better, and the new technology could allow litters to be skewed to produce more females instead of boars.

Cardiff Medicentre graduate Tricho-Tech Ltd has continued its recent  rapid growth. Since starting out here in 1993, Tricho-Tech's staff numbers have grown from four to 28. After four years of high double digit growth, the company last year achieved a turnover of £1.27m, up from £198,000 four years earlier.

Founded in September 2004, the company's management team consists of former Amersham plc (now GE Healthcare) employees.

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Q Chip has received a £500,000 equity investment from a syndicate that includes private equity expert Jon Moulton and E-Synergy, a London based early stage venture capital fund.

Q Chip's technology uses tiny capillaries etched in wafers to create precision engineered micro- and nano particles. The latter have applications in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
