Cardiff Medicentre tenant Cansford Laboratories has held a formal launch ceremony attended by the Welsh Government's business minister Edwina Hart and the Brazilian ambassador Roberto Jaguaribe.
Since arriving last year, the company has set up a state-of-the-art drug & alcohol testing laboratory at the Cardiff Medicentre. Cansford has already set up an partnership with a laboratory in Sao Paulo, Brazil and plans a further international joint venture in Australia.
Edwina Hart commented: "It’s always good to hear that technology developed in Wales is having an impact in countries around the world, and highlights yet again the importance of entrepreneurs and their potential contribution to the Welsh economy."

Cardiff Medicentre tenant Diurnal has successfully raised £335,000 for its lead product Chronocort to complete the final stage of its Phase I trial. The funding will also enable the company to prepare for Phase II trials, which are due to commence during 2012.
Diurnal is a FusionIP plc portfolio company and is developing a novel approach to drug delivery that will help patients suffering from reduced levels of the key hormone cortisol. Chronocort is a modified release therapy that deliversthe hormone in a manner that mimics the body’s normal circadian rhythm. This approach has the potential to help patients suffering from congenital adrenal hyperplasia and adrenal insufficiency.

He was invited on to the programme to comment on the Welsh Government's announcement of a £50 million package to support the recruitment of world-class academic experts by Welsh universities.
Dr Bowman emphasised the need to capture the economic benefits of these future appointments through the creation and long-term retention of Welsh spin-out companies based on their research efforts.

Oxford Innovation, now a tenant at Cardiff Medicentre, has been appointed by the Welsh Government to deliver a new programme that will assist start-up and early stage life sciences firms with high growth potential.
The High Potential Starts programme is a key component of the Welsh Government’s strategy to support sustainable high growth businesses. It has been funded by the Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund.
Support will be available across Wales for firms in the biosciences, medical devices and diagnostics fields and associated supply chain technologies such as electronics, engineering, advanced material science and logistics.

Asalus Medical Instruments, a spinout from Cardiff Medicentre tenant WIMAT, has completed a first closing of a £700,000 venture capital funding round. This follows a successful pre-clinical study of its lead product, Innervision, the company's revolutionary electrosurgical smoke clearance device.
The £292,000 first closing includes contributions from existing investors Fusion IP plc, Finance Wales and IP Group plc. The investors have an option to invest a further £392,000, subject to investor approval and the achievement of milestones.
The funds will be used to commence a "first-in-man" clinical study, subject to regulatory approval. Work will also begin on the process of scaling up the technology, prior to its expected launch in 2013.

Cardiff Medicentre has hosted a highly successful and entertaining visit by a group of 23 Year 12 students from Stanwell School in Penarth.
The students were given the opportunity to take part in a broad range of interactive product and service demonstrations by our tenants MedaPhor, Pharmatelligence and WIMAT.
To round off the visit, Dr Chris Pepper, Reader in Haematology at Cardiff University's School of Medicine, gave a talk on his plans for setting up a new start-up company based on over 13 years of cancer research carried out within his research group.
Dr Mark Bowman, Director of Innovation at the Cardiff Medicentre, commented "This visit was designed to encourage the students, all of whom are studying science subjects at A Level, to consider applying for summer placements here."
He added "In the longer term, I hope that these students will consider working for technology start-ups as an alternative to more traditional graduate roles in large, established employers. With youth entrepreneurship now a key policy objective in Wales, the students have also had the opportunity today to appreciate the hard work and dedication that is involved in setting up a new life sciences business."

The project involved moving a gynaecological surgical procedure from the operating theatre to a new outpatient clinic. This innovation has received excellent feedback from patients and has already made significant savings for the Cardiff and Vale University Hospital Board. It is hoped that the approach will now be adopted across the UK.

Cardiff Medicentre has hosted a vist by Julie Morgan AM, Labour's Welsh Assembly member for Cardiff North. The event was intended to highlight the successful spin-out companies based here and created as a result of the partnership between Cardiff University and Fusion IP plc.
Mrs Morgan was given a demonstration of our tenant MedaPhor Ltd's ScanTrainer product by the company's founder Professor Nazar Amso. ScanTrainer is used for medical ultrasound training, with the company recently announcing its first European and US sales.
Mrs Morgan later met with Dr Neil Warren, founder of Asalus Medical Instruments and head of our tenant WIMAT. Dr Warren demonstrated a number of new products being developed by the company, currently focused on the minimally invasive surgery market. The company's flagship product, Innervision, removes the smoke produced during operations by the use of advanced electrosurgical instruments.

Cardiff Medicentre has appointed Dr Mark Bowman as Director of Innovation. Dr Bowman joins the team having previously worked as a venture capital investor in early-stage technology companies. Prior to this, Mark held senior commercial positions at a number of UK universities.
Dr Bowman originally trained as a chemist at the University of Oxford before taking a PhD at Cardiff University and an MBA at Warwick Business School. In 2002, he was awarded a prestigious Sainsbury Management Fellowship in the Life Sciences.

Cardiff Medicentre's role in flourishing Welsh bioscience sector has been recognised by Leslie Griffiths, the Welsh Assembly Government's Deputy Minister for Science, Innovation & Skills. In an article in the Western Mail, Mr Griffiths has hailed the rapid progress in the Welsh biosciences sector.
According to the Deputy Minister, the sector has grown by over 19% in the past three years and employs around 15,000 people, many in high quality postgraduate and post-doctoral roles. The sector has an estimated annual turnover of £1.3bn, with exports amounting to some £54m.

This will be achieved by allowing students to assess and diagnose common clinical conditions while using the British National Formulary.

OnExamination, a Cardiff Medicentre tenant, has been acquired by BMJ Group.
OnExamination.com was formed by two doctors (Stephen Davis and Dean Jenkins) from Cardiff University who saw the potential of the internet to help doctors prepare for examinations. Since its launch in 2000, the site has expanded to cover the principal post-graduate exams run by the UK royal colleges in medicine, surgery and primary care. It has recently expanded with exam preparation for medical students and nurses and is about to launch a resource for school leavers aiming for a career in medicine.

Founded in 1993 and based in Cardiff, Tricho-Tech focuses on detecting drugs of abuse, principally through testing hair samples. It employs 46 full time staff at its laboratory in Cardiff, which is a broad and in-depth testing facility, with the capability to test 14 drug groups and over 40 analytes.

Q Chip's technology uses tiny capillaries etched in wafers to create precision engineered micro- and nano particles. The latter have applications in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
