Business incubator for biotech and medtech startups

Our story

The Cardiff Medicentre Joint Venture was established in 1992 as an economic development project involving four public sector partners:

After investing cash and land rights into the project, these bodies secured substantial European ERDF funding in order to build a new business incubation facility. Cardiff Medicentre subsequently opened for business on the Heath Park site in 1994.

Cardiff Medicentre was designed to provide biotech and medtech startups with high quality desk, office and laboratory accommodation. We always wanted to be close to Cardiff University and its School of Medicine because we knew the benefits that that location would bring to tenants. We also wanted to fulfil a key objective of providing access to a broad range of high quality business support services that focused on accelerating the growth of new companies.

We’re proud of our success stories. Biotech and medtech companies which began as fledgling businesses, housed and supported by Cardiff Medicentre, have gone on to establish substantial operations in independent, follow-on facilities. Some have been acquired by larger concerns for multi-million pound sums. Others continue to raise substantial amounts of venture capital as they carry on growing.

In 2011, Cardiff Medicentre underwent a substantial refurbishment to modernise the facilities and improve the services we provide to our biotech and medtech startups. We’ll keep investing because we see, every day and in every tenant, the value of what we offer.

As from 1 April 2016 the Cardiff Council and Welsh Government shares in the joint venture was aquired by Cardiff University and the Centre is now jointly run by Cardiff University and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
